May is Mental Health Month
Since 1949, Mental Health America and their affiliates across the country have led the observance of May is Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events, and screenings. They welcome other organizations to join in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities.
The working theme for May is Mental Health Month in 2018 is Whole Body Mental Health. Information will focus on increasing understanding of how the body's various systems impact mental health based on recent research. From food to fitness to gut flora, they will be diving into the elements that make up personal wellness. Topics will include:
- The connection between gut bacteria/flora and mental health;
- The role of inflammation in the development of mental health disorders;
- The preventative and recovery promoting aspects of physical activity; and
- How nutrition and food can affect mental performance and mood.
